Kumbh Mela "kumbh mela" is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. In between, in the sixth year, the Ardh Kumbh Mela (half mela) takes place as well.

But these daily rituals pale in comparison to the scale of the festival called the Kumbh Mela, a religious event of purification that is attended by up to 70 million people.

Celebrated on the banks of India's most sacred rivers, the Ganga, Kshipra, and Godavari, the Maha Kumbh Mela is the world's oldest and largest spiritual.

Kumbh Mela  History :-  the time of Creation, the gods fought a great battle in the sky for possession of a pitcher containing the sacred nectar of immortality. During the battle, four drops of nectar fell to Earth, landing on the tirthas, or river crossings, of these four cities and bestowing their rivers with healing powers. Tens of millions of devotees come from across India and the world to worship at these sacred rivers during the Kumbh Melas.

For the 2013 festival :- the rituals begin on January 27 with the first snan, or ritual bathing, and continue through February 25. There are seven major bathing dates during the festival when it is believed that the waters of the Ganges are particularly charged with healing powers. An Indian citizen, holding a valid Indian passport and aged between 18 and 70 years as on 01.01.2013, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or less, who is physically fit and medically healthy, is eligible for undertaking the Yatra.


An applicant should not suffer from medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, epilepsy, etc. The selected applicant is required to undergo and qualify comprehensive medical examinations conducted by the Delhi Heart and Lung Institute (DHLI) and the ITBP Base Hospital in New Delhi.​



Selection Process


Draw through a fair computerized system - Yatris will be selected and assigned to different batches by the Ministry of External Affairs through a fair computer-generated random gender-balanced selection process. A batch, once allocated to a yatri through the computerized process, cannot be changed.


A spouse, subject to fulfilling prescribed conditions to qualify for the Yatra, will automatically be selected for the same batch, provided he/she has submitted his/her application for the Yatra and this fact is clearly indicated in the relevant column of the application form.
